Madison tops off FMC Tower

Madison has completed the 22-story concrete apartment structure that tops the FMC Tower and is currently finishing up remaining contract work. Previous work included providing foundations as well as the 28-story concrete elevator core and slabs for the structural steel portion of the building, which will contain office and retail space.

From a construction perspective, the tower is distinctive because it is composed of two separate structural systems. It is essentially two buildings stacked on top of each other—a 22-story concrete-framed residential apartment building constructed on top of a 28-story steel-frame office building.

From a community perspective, however, FMC Tower has been making headlines by promising Philadelphia its first “vertical neighborhood,” in which residents can live work and play without ever having to leave the building.
