From our archives: Madison’s goal is to build communities, not just buildings

By Paul Ricciardi, Estimator and Project Manager, Madison Concrete Construction

The Revel Casino in Atlantic City, N.J., was the single largest project that Madison Concrete Construction has ever completed. We use it as a marketing tool on our website and when we speak with potential customers. Although it just opened in April 2012, it is closing September 2014. In short, it took longer to build than it was in operation. This is a sad fact.

In the design and construction business, we face the conundrum of encouraging development so that we can get more work, while also being concerned about over-development and its effects on our communities and society as a whole.

During the whirlwind of our busy workdays, our energy, passion and pride for our work drives us to produce the physical manifestation of the dreams of others. Simply, we fully recognize and appreciate that what is a “project” for us is a place of work, healing, worship or entertainment for someone else. In addition to our pride in our own work, we feel a sense of pride in helping another business succeed. Conversely, it is sad for us to see the end user struggle or close, especially so soon after opening.

We sincerely hope that there is a brighter future for the Revel building as well as its 3,100 employees, and that the lasting concrete structure that we built can continue
to serve as the backbone—both physically and metaphorically—of a revitalization of Atlantic City.
