We’re building better communities

By Jim Dolente Sr., Chairman of the Board, Madison Concrete Construction

At Madison Concrete, we’re all about people and service. I’m proud to say that this philosophy is not restricted to just our business activities. We often have the unique opportunity to roll up our sleeves and provide for the communities we serve. In doing so, we hope to improve the world around us.

As an example, Madison Concrete recently installed a 4,000-square-foot concrete floor, free of charge, in the basement of a building at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Southwest Philadelphia. The concrete was donated by Action Supply Company in Sharon Hill, Pa.

The K-8 school provides a safe, disciplined and positive educational environment in a neighborhood where poverty, crime and violence abound. As part of Cornerstone’s mission and curriculum, the school inspires youth to rise above their surroundings and achieve their highest potential. Ninety-five percent of graduates go on to complete high school in four years, and 66 percent pursue post-secondary educational opportunities.

The school cannot achieve such successes alone, often relying on volunteers and donors to help fund financial aid packages, support students and maintain facilities. So when we learned that Cornerstone needed to rehab one of its buildings, we did not hesitate to do our part in providing a safe place for the students.

Construction professionals have a valued mix of skills, experience and materials/equipment necessary to help nonprofit organizations build better communities. Many are familiar with Habitat for Humanity, but industry organizations like the American Society of Concrete Contractors and General Building Contractors Association also provide members with ways to contribute to community building projects at home and across the country.

If you are interested in donating your services, I encourage you to check out the above organizations or, better yet, take a good look at your own neighborhood.
