Madison preps for mat foundation pour at Penn Medicine’s New Patient Pavilion

Madison Concrete is continuing formwork construction and installation of reinforcing steel in anticipation of the mat foundation pour at the north half of this 16-story building on the former site of Penn Tower. The pour is so far scheduled for early July and will consist of a continuous pour of 6,700 cubic yards of concrete.

The University of Pennsylvania Health Systems’ (Penn Medicine) New Patient Pavilion will provide 500 private patient rooms, a relocated emergency department, 47 operating and procedure rooms, and expanded health care delivery programs including inpatient care for cancer, heart and vascular medicine and surgery, neurology and neurosurgery. With pedestrian bridges and walkways connecting to other buildings as well as the train station, the 1.5 million-square-foot clinical facility will serve as a central hub for the Penn Medicine campus.

The project is using a performance-based contract and integrated project delivery (IPD). The basic IPD tenets (i.e., collaboration, innovation, trust, performance-based gain, shared risk, building information modeling, pull planning, target-cost delivery and transparency) are being implemented in all aspects of the project. The IPD design and construction team, known as PennFIRST, has been working closely with Penn Medicine staff to design from the patient and caregiver’s perspective as well as from the urban design perspective.

Construction will continue through 2020.
